Closed Captioning
Jordan have been at the forefront of bringing closed captioning features to corporate communication and training video projects, enabling equal opportunity for the hard of hearing. Currently all video content for HSBC, Nationwide and HM Customs and Excise are closed captioned.
Closed captioning is the formal technique of subtitling video programmes for hard of hearing viewers.
It's visual syntax with features enabling indication of noise off screen and the placing of text bubbles next to each speaker in a group make this very different to standard subtitling. Specialist encoders create a closed caption data file which is then fed into line 22 of the PAL screen of the master tape.
This code is then copied from the master to the VHS copies during duplication. To play back or 'decode', closed captions in VHS require a caption enabled VCR (with a 'movie text' feature) or a closed caption decoder device that sits on top of a VCR.
The same data file can also be used as 'open captions' - for use on DVD where it appears as a language choice option on the DVD menu or as a choice on an online streaming file or simply as burnt in captions on a vhs copy.
